Cilic Surprises Roddick; Djokovic, Murray, Simon Advance
Upsets continued in the top half of the draw on Thursday at the Rogers Cup in Toronto as 19-year-old Marin Cilic defeated No. 6 and 2003 champion Andy Roddick 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
The Croatian teenager, who beat No. 12 seed Tommy Robredo in the second round, posted his fourth career Top 10 victory, the first since defeating No. 7 Fernando Gonzalez in the third round at the Australian Open in January.
Other seeds to fall in the top quarter section of the draw are World No. 1 Roger Federer and No. 14 seed Fernando Gonzalez. Both lost in the second round on Wednesday.
After splitting the first two sets, Cilic broke in the opening game of the final set as Roddick hit a forehand long at 15-40. Cilic, who converted four of nine break points while losing serve three times in the one hour and 55-minute match, only lost five points on serve in the third set. He never faced a break point.
Cilic, who is 12-4 in his last five tournaments since June, will be making his first career ATP Masters Series quarterfinal appearance.
World No. 3 and defending champion Novak Djokovic moved into the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Robin Soderling of Sweden.
The 21-year-old Serb broke once in each set in the one hour and 19 minute match as he improved to 40-9 on the season. Djokovic also climbed to 19-3 in ATP Masters Series play by reaching the quarterfinals (or better) for the fifth time this year.
Djokovic, who is appearing in his first tournament since a second round exit to Marat Safin at Wimbledon last month, saved all four break points he faced while converting two of five break chances on Soderling's serve.
Djokovic is trying to become the first player to win back-to-back titles in Canada since Andre Agassi in 1994-95.
In an all-Top 10 battle, No. 8 seed Andy Murray overcame a second set letdown in a 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 win over No. 9 Stanislas Wawrinka.
The British No. 1 adavanced to his third straight quarterfinal (Queen's, Wimbledon) and his sixth of the year. Murray, a semifinalist in Toronto two years ago, will face Djokovic in the quarterfinals and attempt to defeat the Serb for the first time in his career (0-4).
Murray broke Wawrinka in the first and third games of the opening set before stumbling in the second set. In the third set, the only break came in the seventh game as Murray went up 4-3 and secured his third victory in four meetings against the Swiss No. 2 this year. Overall, the series is tied 3-3.
In other action, Frenchman Gilles Simon continued his strong play with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Argentine Jose Acasuso.
The 23-year-old Simon, who is coming off his fourth career ATP title in Indianapolis last Sunday, and his biggest win over World No. 1 Roger Federer on Wednesday night, saved all seven break points he faced against Acasuso.
Simon converted two of seven break points in the one hour and 37-minute match en route to his first career ATP Masters Series quarterfinal. Simon won 57 percent of second serve points compared to Acasuso's 39 percent.
He is 2-0 lifetime against Cilic, who he will meet in the quarterfinals. Last year Simon posted a five-set win at Wimbledon and three-setter in Umag.
