Federer/Wawrinka, Roddick/Fish Win On Day One
Doubles action on Monday at the Rogers Masters in Toronto featured past singles champions Roger Federer and Andy Roddick playing alongside their respective countrymen in first round matches.
World No. 1 Federer joined forces with World No. 10 Stanislas Wawrinka to defeat the wild card duo of Frenchman Julien Benneteau and Canadian Frederic Niemeyer 6-4, 6-4 in 62 minutes. It marked their first match win as a duo, having lost in the first round in their previous appearances last year at Rome and Hamburg.
Federer and Wawrinka, who will represent Switzerland at the upcoming Beijing Olympics, next face No. 7 seeds Lukas Dlouhy and Leander Paes.
Meanwhile, World No. 6 Roddick and fellow American Mardy Fish set up a tricky second round meeting with No. 4 seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles after defeating Frenchmen Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra 7-6(6), 6-2. Bhupathi is a four-time champion in Canada, and won the title last year with Czech Pavel Vizner.
Roddick and Fish won the 2002 Houston title in their team's ATP debut and are playing together for just the sixth time in ATP main draw action.
Seven Top 10 singles stars are playing in the Toronto doubles draw this week. No. 2 Rafael Nadal is teaming up with Tommy Robredo, No. 4 Nikolay Davydenko with Igor Andreev, No. 5 David Ferrer with Jarkko Nieminen and No. 9 Andy Murray with Jamie Murray.
