Top Seed Verdasco Powers Into Umag Final

Top-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco (pictured) cruised into his second final from his past four tournaments after dismissing seventh-seed Italian Fabio Fognini 6-1, 6-3 Saturday in the semifinals of the ATP Studena Croatia Open. On Sunday Verdasco will play Russian Igor Andreev, who reached his second consecutive final after defeating Maximo Gonzalez 6-2, 7-6(2).
Verdasco put 79 per cent of first serves into play and offered up just one break point in a compelling performance. He has not dropped a set en route to the final.
Verdasco rose to a career-high South African Airways ATP Ranking of No. 13 two weeks ago following a strong grass court season, when he reached the Nottingham final and the fourth round of Wimbledon. He then advanced to the Bastad semifinals and now finds himself in his sixth ATP final. His lone title came in Valencia in 2004.
The 24-year-old Verdasco notched his 30th match win of the season (currently 30-17; 16-8 on clay) by defeating Fognini. Following a first-round bye, he defeated French qualifier Mathieu Montcourt and German Mischa Zverev in straight sets this week. He is on course to break his career-best record of 35-28, set in 2005.
Andreev, who celebrated his 25th birthday on Monday, advanced to his second straight ATP final following a runner-up finish last week in Gstaad (l. to Hanescu). It was his eighth final appearance overall (3-5 record) and his first since January 2006 at Sydney (l. to Blake).
Andreev twice served for the match in the second set at 5-4 and 6-5, but was broken on both occasions.
The World No. 30 has a 28-20 season record (19-12 on clay), with other highlights including quarterfinal appearances at Buenos Aires (l. to Acasuso), Dubai (l. to Djokovic) and ATP Masters Series events in Miami (l. to Berdych) and Monte-Carlo
