No. 12 seed Tommy Robredo, a two-time semifinalist in Cincinnati, advanced to the second round with a 6-2, 6-2 win over 2003 runner-up Mardy Fish on Monday.
The No. 3 Spaniard (behind No. 2 Nadal, No. 5 Ferrer) improved his career record to 12-6 in Cincinnati and evened his career mark at 3-3 against the American. Robredo converted four of nine break points and never faced a break point in the 63-minute match.

The towering Croat fired 18 aces and saved all five break points he faced in the 69-minute match. He broke Bellucci twice, in the sixth game of the opening set, and in the fifth game of the second set.
Karlovic, who could meet World No. 1 Roger Federer in the third round, will next take on Jose Acasuso.
American Sam Querrey, a quarterfinalist last year in Cincinnati, edged out Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
The 20-year-old California fired 20 aces in the one hour and 52-minute match. The decisive break came in the eighth game before Querrey served it out.
Querrey will face No. 8 seed Andy Murray in the second round on Wednesday.
