Nestor/Zimonjic Triumph Over Bryans In Toronto

Second seeds Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic (pictured) captured their third straight ATP doubles title with a 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 victory over top seeded Americans Bob and Mike Bryan in the final of the Rogers Cup in Toronto on Sunday.
In the third final this season that the two top teams in the Stanford ATP Doubles Race have clashed, Bob and Mike Bryan led by 6-3 in the match tie-break with two points to come on Bob’s serve before Nestor/Zimonjic hit back to win the final seven points of the match and clinch victory after 1 hr., 9 min. A crowd of approximately 7,500 people watched the match on Centre Court at the Rexall Centre.
"It wasn't looking great at 6-3 in the tiebreaker, but we turned it around and won seven straight points," assessed Nestor. "Nenad played some unbelievable points in the tiebreaker to keep us in there, and we then served well too when we got ahead."
Added Zimonjic: "We played, like Danny said, perfect first set, and then a lot of turnaround in the second. And also in the super tiebreaker it was a lot of excitement, so we're really happy."
"In one of those super tiebreakers, it's pretty much anyone anyone's ballgame," said Mike Bryan. "Usually when you have mini breaks early there you're going to win it. We were up 6-3, Bob serving, and I kind of liked our chances at that point. But they played a few spectacular shots, and I don't think we won another point. The momentum just shifted."
Added Bob: "We were playing with good energy, and the crowd was awesome. This was just a great match and a great atmosphere."
The Bryan brothers were victorious when the teams met in the final of Masters Series Rome, however the Canadian/Serbian team of Nestor/Zimonjic avenged that loss a week later in the Masters Series Hamburg title match.
"It's great to play these matches in front of the big crowds and against a team like the Bryans," said Zimonjic. "Now, head-to-head with them we are 2-all in the matches, and every time we play them it was in the finals. So really looking forward to the next tournaments, and hopefully we can continue to keep this level."
The 35-year-old Nestor won the Canada title for the first time in 2000 with countryman Sebastien Lareau, while the 32-year-old Zimonjic’s previous best finish was the quarterfinals in 2006 (w/ Santoro).
The Stanford ATP Doubles Race leaders now have a 36-11 season record and have won 14 consecutive matches. Since May, they have compiled an impressive 26-2 record with titles at Masters Series Hamburg, Queen’s Club (d. Melo/Sa) and Wimbledon (d. Bjorkman/Ullyett), and runner-up finishes at Masters Series Rome and Roland Garros (d. Cuevas/Horna).
The Bryan twins, currently fourth on the list of Open Era title leaders, were chasing their 48th ATP doubles title and now slip to a 47-32 record in finals. They were bidding for their third title in Canada, having prevailed in 2002 (d. Knowles/Nestor) and ’06 (d. Hanley/Ullyett).
This season the 32-year-old California natives have won three titles at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami (d. Bhupathi/Knowles), Barcelona (d. Frystenberg/Matkowski) and Masters Series Rome and reached the finals at five other tournaments
