Saturday Brings Sizzling Semifinals
After a beautiful day of quarter-final tennis, both semifinal match-ups are set for Saturday and the two storylines could not be any more different.
In the first singles semifinal, the suddenly flashy Frenchman Gilles Simon will take on the savvy veteran Nicolas Kiefer. Simon is looking to increase his win streak to 10 after capturing the title in Indianapolis last week and making it through four matches already in Toronto. The surprise semifinalist has been the talk of the town since defeating world No. 1 Roger Federer on Wednesday and he has kept the momentum going. He will have a tough test with Kiefer who is the type of player that never says die. The German has been a Rogers Cup finalist twice before in 1999 and 2004 but has never made the final. The two have not met before so it is anyone's guess as to who the winner will be.
The second semi is not necessarily the one fans thought they would get but it is star-studded nonetheless. The players were decided in two extremely entertaining matches on Friday night. First up, Andy Murray eliminated Novak Djokovic in straight sets to cause what many believe to be an upset. However, Murray has been playing very well of late reaching the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and he is looking to capture his first ATP Masters Series on what he claims is his best surface.
Murray will be in tough against world No. 2 Rafael Nadal who came back after losing a tough first set against Richard Gasquet to win the match 6-7(12), 6-2, 6-1. The contest will be a rematch of the Wimbledon quarters where Nadal beat Murray in straight sets. The Spaniard has a 4-0 record over his opponent but Murray has proven he can challenge Nadal in the past as the Scot pushed him to five sets at the 2007 Australian Open. Murray is currently playing some of the best tennis of his career so it would not be surprising if he was finally able to break through one of his biggest rivals.
The top two doubles teams will also be in action as No. 2 seeds Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic will play No. 7 seeds Leander Paes and Lukas Dlouhy in the afternoon while top seeds Mike and Bob Bryan will take on Paul Hanley and Jordan Kerr in the evening.
